Roots is more than just an awarded self-watering glass planter—it’s a poetic approach to plant care in the modern world. Designed by awarded industrial designer Sinem Hallı, Roots blends aesthetics, simplicity, and sustainability in a single sculptural form. It is crafted entirely from glass and functions with a self-watering mechanism that simplifies plant care while enhancing interior spaces.

In our busy lives, taking care of houseplants can feel overwhelming. Roots offers a design solution that merges nature with minimal intervention. The concept is simple: two hand-crafted glass chambers fit inside one another. A natural cotton wick connects them, drawing water from the lower chamber to the upper pot only as needed. Your plant drinks only what it needs—nothing more, nothing less.

This intuitive functionality empowers even the busiest or least experienced plant owners to enjoy lush, healthy plants with confidence and ease. The self-watering mechanism not only reduces water waste but also prevents the premature death of plants due to inconsistent care, making it a product that promotes both environmental and emotional sustainability.

Design Story

The inspiration behind Roots comes from observing how plants thrive in nature, independently and intuitively. The product’s transparent form is more than a visual decision—it celebrates visibility, showing the water level and making the life cycle part of the design language.

By making water levels visible, it encourages users to engage more mindfully with their plants—fostering a closer, more sustainable relationship between humans and nature.

Each planter is handcrafted through traditional glass-making techniques. Available in two sizes—a compact set of small planters for herbs and small plants, and a larger standalone version for bolder greenery. Roots adapts to different interior needs.

Whether displayed on a windowsill or a work desk, Roots enhances living spaces not just visually but experientially—bringing calm, routine, and a sense of connectedness to nature into users’ daily lives.

Sustainability Focus

Glass, as a fully recyclable and non-toxic material, forms the essence of Roots. Its longevity and zero-waste potential support long-term environmental values. Additionally, the self-watering system reduces water waste and supports the healthy growth of plants, encouraging responsible plant parenting.

By minimizing the need for plastic parts or electricity-based watering systems, Roots promotes a low-impact lifestyle. It’s a quiet advocate for circular design principles.

Its design promotes longevity in more ways than one. The durability of the glass form, the replaceable cotton wick, and the timeless aesthetic ensure that Roots can be used and loved for years. Roots aligns with slow living and conscious consumption practices.

Applications

Roots is ideal for water-loving plants such as African violets or pilea. Its minimal yet sculptural presence makes it an aesthetic addition to modern interiors—from kitchen counters to office desks.

With no setup complexity or digital components, Roots is ideal for users seeking a calm, tactile, and screen-free plant care experience. The absence of electronic systems also contributes to a more meditative and mindful plant care ritual—allowing the user to reconnect with the rhythms of nature without relying on apps or notifications.

Whether placed as a solo statement or grouped in a modular setup, this awarded self-watering glass planter becomes a centerpiece of calm in the fast pace of daily life. Its timeless silhouette complements a variety of interior styles, while its transparency invites a subtle dialogue between the object and the living plant inside it. This interplay makes Roots not only a practical solution but also an ever-changing design element in the space.
